TofuGo offers savory protein snack option

The savory protein snack market keeps growing, but most aisles look the same. Bars, shakes, and jerky fill the shelves, and many of them taste sweet. TofuGo fills the gap in this crowded category by turning tofu into a shelf-stable protein option. The startup targets consumers who want savory flavors and whole ingredients rather than sweet treats.
Rooted in heritage and finance
TofuGo’s flavors draw on Founder and CEO Caroline Dai’s Chinese heritage. Dai grew up in a family that ate tofu every day, and she applied that background to the product. She previously worked in finance and noticed how much sugar she consumed from sweet protein bars and shakes. One day she realized she was eating more than 50 grams of sugar from protein products alone, she said. She wanted a savory option that tasted like food and used whole ingredients.
The company uses soybeans for protein, providing 12 grams of plant-based protein per serving with zero grams of sugar. Dai said the formula contains no added isolates or additives. Customers often say the snacks remind them of a favorite dish at an Asian restaurant. The flavors range from soy barbecue to spicy chili, both relying on traditional ingredients like soy sauce and Sichuan peppercorn.

According to the report, Dai decided to become a founder after years working with businesses in mergers and acquisitions. She saw a clear opportunity in the market. “I see a huge white space in the savory protein category,” she said. Many shoppers want something other than sweet cookies and bars, she added.
Growth through organic interest
Store owners contacted the founder after seeing viral videos with thousands of comments asking for the snack in major cities. Dai said many people asked how to stock it. That organic reach helped the brand expand quickly. A recent video of the founder carrying TofuGo through a Whole Foods aisle drew hundreds of comments asking the chain to carry the product.
Building demand without a big ad budget

TofuGo has been bootstrapped and profitable since its first month. A third-party logistics partner handles fulfillment and ships TofuGo across the U.S. and Canada. That arrangement frees Dai to focus on retail expansion rather than shipping logistics. Investors from around the world have already reached out, and Dai plans to open an institutional round.
The brand will launch in the United Kingdom in the fourth quarter, marking its third market after the U.S. and Canada. Customers there send messages and DMs daily. Dai said she hopes TofuGo will be known as a major savory protein player in five years. She wants people who think of tofu to think of TofuGo first.
