Tesla Faces Probe Over Suspension Problems
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles due to complaints that a suspension component can detach, potentially causing drivers to lose control of steering. The investigation covers certain 2018-2020 Tesla Model 3 sedans and 2021-2023 Model Y SUVs.
The NHTSA has received 156 complaints alleging that the front lower lateral link detached from affected vehicles. This component failure could render a vehicle undriveable and require towing, according to the NHTSA.

The agency’s Office of Defects Investigation has opened a preliminary evaluation to assess the scope, cause, and severity of a potential safety defect. The investigation marks the first stage of NHTSA’s defect-review process.
Most of the complaints reviewed by regulators indicated drivers received little or no warning before the alleged failure occurred, though some owners reported hearing unusual noises beforehand. The NHTSA said it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to the issue.

The evaluation will focus on determining the underlying cause of the failures and whether a broader defect may exist, the agency said. Tesla has yet to comment on the NHTSA investigation. Previous Tesla recalls have involved similar suspension-related problems, including a 2021 recall of about 2,800 Model 3 vehicles and a 2023 recall of 422 Model 3 vehicles.
